Therefore I purchased The New Self-Sufficient Gardener by John Seymour. While researching self-sufficiency, I have found John Seymour to be one of the premier experts in the field. This is a beautiful book, heavily illustrated and packed full of information. The book includes the "essentials of good gardening", an illustrated index of vegetables, plants and herbs, how to draw up a plan for your garden, greenhouse gardening, and preserving your harvest. It even covers backyard livestock, and how to build a garden path or shed. Highly recommended!nfmgirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03677291537193518055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-70719459535273601072009-04-01T23:05:00.000-04:002009-04-01T23:05:00.000-04:00I recently received the National Geographic "Compl...I recently received the National Geographic "Complete Survival Manual" by Michael S. Sweeney as a Christmas present. This book is packed full of information. It covers survival tips for all different types of environments, from swamps to deserts to subpolar regions. It talks about the mental side as well as the physical side of survival. What to eat, first aid treatment, the rule of threes, water treatment, natural disasters. This book covers it all!nfmgirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03677291537193518055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-48952419411689311032009-03-30T15:27:00.000-04:002009-03-30T15:27:00.000-04:00I highly recommend The Concise Guide to Self-Suffi...I highly recommend The Concise Guide to Self-Sufficiency by John Seymour which is a updated remake of his The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency. It's full of illustrations and loaded with practical advice on practically every topic you'd want to know about: vegetables, herbs, fruits, livestock, buildings, and how to use and preserve the "fruits of your labors". I get inspired every time I pick it up.
DebDeborahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10328505583721830842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-189584008450456712009-03-30T12:41:00.000-04:002009-03-30T12:41:00.000-04:00The encyclopedia of country living is a very good ...The encyclopedia of country living is a very good book a lot like storey's basic country skills. This book is what started my enthusiasm for becoming a homesteader. The pictures are colored, the reading is easy, and the projects make sense. I dare you to put this book down. You will not be able to.

Sara Carlson- Harvestmoonhomestead.blogspot.comAlilcrunchi (Sara)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17794086862116054487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-24886448903778601352009-03-30T12:25:00.000-04:002009-03-30T12:25:00.000-04:00( I splurged on Amazon a few weeks ago and got ove...( I splurged on Amazon a few weeks ago and got over 20 books just on homesteading and survival) ------ Storey's Basic Country Skills by John and Martha Storey is jam packed full with advice on how to do things yourself and create a homestead that stands out as being a self sufficient haven. I found it really helpful when it comes to raising any livestock big or small. It demonstrates the different techniques you need to know to properly care for your livestock. This book is great for anyone looking to raise some animals and use them to their best ability.

Sara Carlson- Harvestmoonhomestead.blogspot.comAlilcrunchi (Sara)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17794086862116054487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-16776984712502146662009-03-30T12:08:00.000-04:002009-03-30T12:08:00.000-04:00I just finished reading the Backyard Homestead by ...I just finished reading the Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a way to support themselves but do not neccisarly have as much space as one would normally think it would take to be self sufficient. I found this book to be helpful for my conditions as well. We have more than enough land to be self sufficient off of however, the land is all forest. So clearing the minimal amount would be best for us. This book tells you in vivid detail how to get at least 1400 eggs, 50 pounds of wheat, 60 pounds of fruit, 2000 pounds of vegetables, 280 pounds of pork and 75 pounds of nuts from one quarter of and acre. It is a great book for anyone who wants or needs to start small.

Sara Carlson- Harvestmoonhomestead.blogspot.comAlilcrunchi (Sara)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17794086862116054487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-25926845631592485542009-03-30T11:14:00.000-04:002009-03-30T11:14:00.000-04:00I blogged it here http://harvestmoonhomestead.blog...I blogged it here http://harvestmoonhomestead.blogspot.com/2009/03/awesome-contest-with-prizes.html

Ditto with the review.Alilcrunchi (Sara)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17794086862116054487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7694156048670349907.post-68060160034127591012009-03-30T06:08:00.000-04:002009-03-30T06:08:00.000-04:00What a generous prize package!
